“To Steal or Not To Steal?” That Is the Question
As the three Wise Men traveled from the East bearing royal gifts for
the new-born king, baby Jesus, on the day known as the Epiphany, so
too, the members of “Forever 50” experienced some gift-receiving of
It was Wednesday, January 3rd, three days before the day of the
Epiphany, when almost 30 members of our group gathered in the
Social Hall for some Epiphany-tide fun. Alongside our refreshments
table was another table filled with all sorts of serious and fun little gifts
disguised in brown paper bags and large sacks. Each person chooses
a number “from the hat,” then when his/her number is called, that
person picks a bag—usually after shaking it and feeling the weight.
After opening it to, aaahs, “oh, no” or laughs, the person gets to keep the
gift—that is—until the next person goes. The next number can forfeit their
chance to pick a gift and instead “steal” another person’s gift. Anxiety, and
laughs, took place as a number of people “stole” the Michael Kors Travel
Cosmetic Bag and the Victoria Secret Lunch Bag. Poor Ruth. No one wanted
to steal her combination vegetable peeler and grater!! Needless to say, it
was a winter afternoon of fun and laughs!
On Wednesday, January 10th, “Forever 50” had guest speaker, Mindy
Giambalvo, a Nurse-Practitioner, whose topic was “Living an Independent
Life: Fall Prevention.” Using Power Point, she outlined the magnitude of the
fall problem for seniors, while also having us analyze the multiple risk
factors that work in concert, especially in the home where 50% of all falls
occur. Mindy then led us in simple strength and balance exercises for
seniors to prevent falls. Everyone agreed that she was very informative
A repeat of a much-loved activity, Kathy Reccardi from “Canvas Creations,”
led us in painting a summer seascape using acrylic paints in pink, yellow,
orange, blue and purple on canvas January 17th.
I was away at The United Lutheran Seminary, Gettysburg on Wednesday,
January 24th, so we canceled our meeting and presentation by Angie from the
Alzheimer Association on “Effective Communication Strategies.”
And finally, on the last Wednesday of the month, members enjoyed making
their own Ice Cream Sundaes replete with Butterscotch, Fudge, and
Strawberry sauces, whipped cream, and a cherry!
Continue to watch for other events and trip offerings on our “Forever 50”
Bulletin Board which is on the way to the Social Hall. All are welcome!
